This event will hear from representatives from donor, international NGO, IUCN and Indigenous Peoples organization, having a candid discussion about challenges and systemic shifts that institutions and global structures are making to center rights-based nature conservation.

Description de la séance

"Fortress conservation” models have created a barrier between protected areas and communities, leading to exclusion of the very groups who have traditionally had nature’s best interests at heart. To secure critical ecosystems and support these communities to continue to be stewards of nature, a different approach is evolving.

This shift becomes increasingly urgent as global conservation targets expand. With the Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework calling for the conservation of 30% of Earth’s land and seas by 2030 (“30x30”), our session will begin with the framing of the funding needs and streams for achieving 30x30, with commentary on current funding mechanisms and from Indigenous Peoples on their role in natural resource management and conservation.

Building on these perspectives, we will share results examining the role of donors and international NGOs in conservation projects implemented with public funds; and move to a discussion about evolving partnerships.
