Join us to explore how the mosaic management of protected areas strengthens the Caatinga’s resilience against desertification and climate change. A unique space to exchange experiences, inspire solutions, and build pathways toward a sustainable future for tropical drylands.
Description de la séance
The Caatinga, the only biome found exclusively in Brazil, faces increasing pressures from deforestation, wildfires, and climate change, which accelerate desertification processes and heighten social vulnerability. In this context, protected areas play a strategic role by safeguarding biodiversity, preserving ecosystem services, and fostering sustainable alternatives such as community-based tourism, family farming, and low-impact extractivism. The presentation will highlight the mosaic management strategy of protected areas in the Araripe region, bringing together experiences from the Araripe National Forest, the Chapada do Araripe Environmental Protection Area, the Negreiros National Forest, the Aiuaba Ecological Station, and the Araripe Manakin Wildlife Refuge as examples of integration between conservation, local communities, and regional development. This approach seeks to demonstrate how integrated management strengthens socio-ecological resilience, contributes to combating desertification, and inspires solutions applicable to other tropical arid and semi-arid environments on a global scale.
