The Coral Triangle, home to 76% of the world’s coral species and more reef fish species than any marine region, now faces another escalating global crisis: plastic pollution. A regional strategy is urgently needed to integrate solutions for marine plastic pollution with biodiversity protection and community-centred conservation.

Across 27,000+ islands that make up the Coral Triangle’s archipelagic states, plastic waste is overwhelming key coastal areas with devastating consequences. Without decisive intervention, plastic volume in our oceans could outweigh fish by 2050. Through the multilateral platform of the Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF), the six governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste, are now working together with partners on mitigating transboundary marine plastic pollution. Drawing on experience from the governments, coastal communities and partners, a regional strategy to combat marine plastic pollution will be developed to prioritize support for coastal cities, tourism hubs, and MPAs/OECMs vital for biodiversity conservation, contributing to global biodiversity goals and global ambitions to fight plastic pollution.
