Discover how cities can drive ecological regeneration with nature-based solutions. Hear concrete tools, policies, and case studies—from SBTN guidance to Quito’s NbS and Colombia’s new urban sustainability law—and learn how to align local innovation with GEF-9 priorities for nature-positive, climate-resilient urban development.

Description de la séance

How can cities become engines of ecological regeneration? This session bridges global frameworks with local innovation under the GEF-9 Sustainable Cities Integrated Program. Moderator Tony Nello (IUCN) will set priorities, including strengthening institutional frameworks for subnational MEA implementation and expanding focus to urban–rural interfaces and resource sheds. Panelists will share practical tools and experiences to advance nature-positive urban transformation: Jennifer Rae Pierce (IUCN CEM, UBHub) introduces the new SBTN guidance for cities; Monica Reinoso Paredes (Environmental Fund of Quito) presents Quito’s NbS strategies for Latin America; and Carlos Mario Gutiérrez Arrubla, Mayor of La Estrella (Colombia), highlights insights from Ley 2476 de 2025 promoting green, biodiverse, climate-resilient cities. Attendees will gain actionable methods to integrate biodiversity into infrastructure, enhance urban green spaces via NbS, and leverage IUCN tools and networks—advancing whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches.
