Successful conservation is embedded in long-term and sustainable financing options and depends on sound scientific knowledge. The human element must be part of the equation to ensure that livelihood options are prioritized. Come engage in a conversation on holistic ecosystem management approaches, the needed science and financing models being used.

Description de la séance

Critical coastal and marine ecosystems, mangrove, seagrass and coral reef, are at the center of thriving biodiversity, climate resilience and socio-economic wellbeing. They are Nature-based Solutions that need to be well managed for continued provision of ecosystem services. They are however declining at a higher rate mostly driven by human actions. Management practices including restoration are done at different scales with varied levels of success. These site-level initiatives are mostly focused on single ecosystems which undermine their interconnectedness. The fragmented actions are also limited to project funding which jeopardizes the long-term sustainability. This calls for a paradigm shift from conventional conservation and restoration to holistic management, sustainable financing and promoting livelihood options for adjacent communities.

This session will focus on best practices in mangrove, seagrass and coral reef conservation and explore options for continental collaboration and securing financing mechanisms driven by societal needs.
