Note explicative
The Government of Indonesia is committed to the systematic conservation of Javan and Sumatran rhinos. We are working closely with stakeholders to ensure the protection of these species in their natural habitats. The Rhino Protection Unit (RPU) program is a key element of our efforts, and we are dedicated to carrying out intensive protection activities to safeguard both rhino populations and their habitats. The RPU team will continue to conduct intensive patrol activities and monitor rhino populations and habitats, as well as other animals, using camera traps at all sites. The use of thermal drones for population and habitat monitoring will also be intensified in Way Kambas National Park, Ujung Kulon National Park, Gunung Leuser National Park, and other forest areas that serve as rhino habitats.
Breeding programs for Sumatran Rhinos will continue at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary facility in Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) and the Rhino Sanctuary in Kelian, East Kalimantan. The breeding programs will also be initiated at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Aceh, and the Javan Rhino Study and Conservation Area (JRSCA) in Ujung Kulon National Park. Given the importance of preserving the genetic diversity of Javan Rhinos, there is a need to explore ways to enhance the systematic breeding of these animals within the JRSCA area. The breeding program will be conducted through semi-natural breeding management and technological approaches through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and Biobank programs. All rhino conservation programs and activities in Indonesia require technical and financial support from national and international communities.
The adoption of this motion will empower governments, NGOs, and communities to help protect remaining population and habitats of critically endangered Javan and Sumatran rhinos in Asia from becoming extinct in the wild and maintain vital ecosystem services, ensuring ecological, social, and economic benefits for present and future generations.
