As the climate crisis intensifies, the degradation of biodiversity and ecosystems escalates, directly impacting the global business economy, which heavily relies on these natural resources. Businesses, being dependent on biodiversity and ecosystems, are vulnerable to the climate crisis. Climate adaptation is increasingly essential for restoring ecosystems and, by extension, building resilient businesses. This resolution seeks to address the critical gaps between climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and corporate responsibility in the face of the escalating planetary crisis.
Businesses impact biodiversity and ecosystems both directly through operations and indirectly via supply chains and investments. The impact of climate change on businesses—such as disrupted supply chains and rising insurance costs—are evident through the Basel Climate Risk Drivers and transmission channels. The health of businesses and Earth's ecosystems are intrinsically linked, yet currently in an inverse relationship, where business success often comes at the expense of ecosystems.

Currently, corporate climate accountability focuses primarily on mitigation rather than adaptation. Without integrating climate adaptation strategies that account for protection of biodiversity and ecosystem, climate risks will worsen despite mitigation efforts. By incorporating biodiversity into business operations, companies can improve risk management, secure ecosystem services, and enhance their environmental and social reputation.

The primary issue with the present legal framework is its failure in affirmatively establishing the role of private sector – particularly businesses in climate adaptation for preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. This resolution stresses the urgent need for businesses to adopt climate adaptation strategies. Acknowledging business’s dependence on biodiversity, and on nature stewards, will not only protect natural resources but also increase business resilience and sustainability. It also facilitates the critical flow of finance into climate adaptation. Ultimately, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between business and nature is essential for addressing the planetary crisis and ensuring a sustainable future for ecosystems and economies.
