Peter MANYARA

Biographie
Peter Manyara previously worked with UNEP’s global initiative on marine litter since its infancy to its evolution into the current Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML), where he supported efforts to establish a global framework for strengthening regional and national mechanisms to address marine litter around the world. He was instrumental in coordinating and monitoring regional assessments undertaken in 12 regional seas areas that contributed to enhanced understanding on the marine litter issue and regional action plans to control and reduce marine litter. He was part of the technical working group that authored the UNEP/IOC global guidelines on survey and monitoring of marine litter, developed to support efforts by regions, countries, and relevant organizations to address the problem of monitoring and assessment of marine litter. While working at UNEP’s global Regional Seas Programme secretariat, he played an active role in implementation of diverse marine and coastal conservation activities across UNEP’s 18 Regional Seas programmes, conventions and actions plan areas. Apart from work in the marine environment, Peter has worked with UNESCO where he coordinated national activities of a scientific initiative to strengthen regional resilience to impacts of drought in the Horn of Africa within its International Hydrological Programme (IHP). He later coordinated the implementation of scientific studies across sub-Saharan Africa under UNESCO’s International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) to enhance knowledge on the impacts of hazardous mining wastes and abandoned mine sites in order to influence policy reform and develop remedial strategies for rehabilitation. He has been involved in a number of initiatives, including institutional development and capacity building of national water institutions and partner agencies on application of ecosystem-based management tools in landscape rehabilitation and restoration, development of ecosystem management and integrated wate
