Why attend

In the backdrop of a 'failed' process to secure an international legally binding plastics treaty, the session focuses on what next in accelerating Africa’s transition towards a circular plastics economy. It explores innovative approaches to keep plastic flowing in a circular system and pathways to scaling bankable start-ups and spin-offs.

Session Description

The Africa Ocean Forum (2024) called for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on a Global Plastics Treaty to pursue a legally binding instrument that covers the entire life cycle of plastics, ensuring it is ambitious, effective, equitable, science-based, and includes the phaseout of problematic plastics and chemicals. Despite a ‘failed’ INC 5.2 process, a number of groups align on the need to work together in a multistakeholder and inclusive approach for a just transition to a circular economy. What innovation is required to advance circular solutions that address the plastic pollution problem towards a sustainable world? This session rethinks how to accelerate the shift towards a circular plastics economy, exploring innovative approaches and market-deplorable solutions that can keep plastic materials flowing in a “closed loop” system, and pathways to strengthen the enabling environment to scale bankable innovative start-ups and spin-offs.
