Springs, among the most biologically rich and socio-ecologically vital ecosystems, are rapidly disappearing due to systemic neglect and lack of protection. This session discusses how to mobilize a global effort to urgently secure their recognition, conservation, and investment before these critical ecosystems and the species they sustain are lost forever.

Description de la séance

Springs are critical ecosystems linking subterranean aquifers to surface environments, providing essential resources for biodiversity and human well-being. Their unique microhabitats and geological isolation make them vital refuges for rare, endangered, ancient, and highly specialized species, many of which rely exclusively on these ecosystems. A significant proportion of these species remain undiscovered. Additionally, groundwater sources feeding springs are crucial for human well-being and the economy. However, springs and groundwater-dependent habitats face growing threats from pollution, groundwater extraction, invasive species, and climate change. Protecting springs safeguards biodiversity, culture, economies, and water security, ensuring resilience for both nature and communities. Despite their importance, springs remain among the most neglected and unprotected habitats globally. The lack of a standardized classification system, biodiversity assessment, and conservation priorities leaves them highly vulnerable. This session will unite experts to identify gaps, develop solutions, and drive global action for their protection.
