The session provides a dynamic space for reflection, learning, and collaboration, fostering stronger legal defence of the environment and human rights while promoting more effective and inclusive justice frameworks.

Strengthening environmental and climate justice is fundamental to democratic governance grounded in rights. In Latin America, the Escazú Agreement represents a milestone by ensuring access to information, public participation, environmental justice, and protection of defenders. Globally, the climate crisis has driven significant jurisprudential advances, including the Advisory Opinions of the International Court of Justice and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which clarify state duties on mitigation, adaptation, and rights protection under principles such as intergenerational equity and enhanced due diligence. Additionally, Recommendation 64 of the Special Rapporteur on human rights and climate change assigns IUCN a central role in training judges and legal professionals to strengthen capacities for climate litigation. Against this backdrop, this event is conceived as a platform for critical dialogue, reflection, and learning, fostering the development of coherent legal standards to defend the environment and human rights at national, regional, and global levels.Organised by
