This session builds on the first WIO LMMA Forum held in September 2024 in Madagascar to launch the Pan-African LMMA Alliance as a regional platform to strengthen community-led marine conservation in the African continent and position it as a stepping stone towards a broader continental movement.

Description de la séance

Locally Managed Marine Areas have become a promising model of community-led conservation, with communities at the center. Despite growing recognition, adoption of this approach remains uneven across the region.

To address this, Madagascar hosted the WIO LMMA Forum September 2024, which gathered 300 participants from nine countries. A key outcome was a collective agreement to establish a regional coalition to coordinate efforts, expand LMMA coverage, strengthen national networks, and amplify community voices.

The session aims to launch the Pan-African LMMA Alliance as a regional platform to strengthen community-led marine conservation in the African Continent. The session will showcase the WIO LMMA Alliance as a model for regional collaboration and community leadership towards establishing a Pan-African LMMA Alliance. It will seek to secure commitments from key stakeholders, highlight contribution of marine IPLCs to the GBF targets, and identify potential national chapters to advance the LMMA movement across Africa.
