Why attend

Event participants can learn about the strengths and opportunities for harnessing the World Heritage Convention in support of implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, propose concrete ways and initiatives to maximise this potential, and overcome the contemporary challenges faced in nominating and protecting natural and cultural sites.

Session Description

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention contributes significantly to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. It is unique in its capacity to link the protection of natural and cultural heritage and delivery of this through its network of over 1,200 sites. This event presents key outcomes and recommendations from an expert meeting (representatives from 10 States, UNESCO, International Indigenous Peoples Forum on World Heritage, WCPA, IUCN Secretariat, ICOMOS and ICCROM) on the World Heritage Convention and the Global Biodiversity Framework and engages the audience in identifying specific actions that promote the use the World Heritage Convention in support of KMGBF targets. The event also examines the options to amplify the role of local communities and Indigenous Peoples, as well as the synergies and complementarities among the UNESCO designated areas, to support these efforts.
