From Baseline to Breakthrough: Fungal Conservation in the UAE and the Middle Eastern Region

Description de la séance

Fungi are fundamental to healthy ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and climate resilience. Yet, they remain among the most underrepresented groups in conservation, particularly across the Middle East and West Asia. This session will introduce two landmark regional initiatives designed to close this gap and strengthen fungal conservation efforts. The first is the UAE’s inaugural National Fungi Checklist, a two-year research project documenting fungal diversity across the country’s varied habitats. The second is the launch of a regional Middle Eastern and West Asian fungal database, laying the foundation for future research, conservation assessments, and integration into policy frameworks—especially within arid and semi-arid ecosystems.
