Canadian society is a leader in private land conservation. This session will focus on the concept of voluntary conservation as applied in Quebec and, within a different legal and cultural context, across Canada. An innovative, effective, and transferable approach to safeguarding biodiversity on private lands.

In Quebec and across Canada, the practice of voluntary conservation has become a vital pillar in protecting biodiversity, complementing publicly governed protected areas.This approach is rooted in civic engagement: citizens, landowners, and a vast network of conservation organizations across the country.
By 2025, over 650,000 hectares will have been protected through the coordinated efforts of more than 150 organizations, demonstrating the effectiveness of this collaborative approach.
This session will offer insights into the foundations, tools, and outcomes of voluntary conservation, while also exploring the legal and cultural differences across provinces and territories.
You will discover a flexible, innovative, and transferable approach that engages local communities, builds lasting relationships with landowners, and plays an active role in achieving national conservation goals. A concrete solution to strengthen biodiversity where it is most vulnerable.
