Mismanaged rangelands carry rising economic costs, from poor grazing to agricultural or mining conversion. Sustainable rangeland management through Nature-based Solutions secures long-term economic value, enhances livelihoods, and safeguards biodiversity. By delivering broad co-benefits, NbS shifts focus from short-term exploitation to lasting socio-environmental and financial gains for communities and landscapes.
Description de la séance
Rangelands cover half the Earth’s surface and underpin the livelihoods of millions, yet their economic value is undermined by mismanagement, degradation, and conversion. The mounting costs of these practices demand a shift from short-term exploitation to sustainable management. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer cost-effective pathways to safeguard rangeland ecosystems, enhance resilience, and generate co-benefits for people, nature, and economies—making them central to achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets. This side event, organized by IUCN in collaboration with GIZ, will present findings from a new rangelands discussion paper that sets the stage for the flagship Economics of Rangeland Restoration report to be launched at UNCCD COP17. It will also showcase insights from the ELD Drought Report. By convening policymakers, financial institutions, conservation organizations, and private sector actors, the event will highlight the economic case for investing in NbS for rangelands and call for urgent action to scale up restoration globally.
