Human-Centred Conservation calls for reimagining and transforming conservation by centring the rights, knowledge, and leadership of those living closest to nature. By aligning human wellbeing with biodiversity goals, it advances equity, resilience, and shared responsibility, offering pathways for effective and sustainable conservation in the Anthropocene.
Description de la séance
Conservation is undergoing a critical re-examination in response to persistent challenges of exclusion, inequity, and unsustainable outcomes. Human-Centred Conservation (HCC) is proposed as a transformative approach that places the rights, knowledge, and leadership of those living closest to nature at the core of conservation practice, while recognising the shared responsibility of all people for sustaining the planet. This presentation introduces the conceptual foundations of HCC and examines its potential to reframe conservation by aligning human wellbeing with biodiversity goals. It articulates pathways for fostering equity, resilience, and shared stewardship in the Anthropocene, where human–nature interdependencies are increasingly evident. Drawing on empirical case studies and practice-based insights, the presentation explores opportunities and challenges for embedding HCC within global policy frameworks and local implementation. In doing so, it advances critical dialogue on rights-based, effective, and sustainable conservation futures.Organised by
