The Freshwater Challenge is the world’s largest initiative to restore degraded freshwater ecosystems, aiming to safeguard biodiversity, build climate resilience, and secure water resources by 2030. As a founding member and co-lead, the UAE is turning this global ambition into practical action designed for arid and water-scarce contexts.Co-organised by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Emirates Nature–WWF, this session will spotlight the UAE’s achievements and new commitments in conserving and restoring freshwater and coastal wetlands. Case studies will highlight successes in protected area designation, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement.
The dialogue will also explore synergies with the Global Freshwater Challenge and international frameworks such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, underscoring co-benefits across biodiversity, climate, water, local food systems, and eco-tourism. Participants from government, NGOs, and global partners will share lessons, exchange innovations, and chart collaborative pathways to scale up restoration in arid regions.
