How can the forestry sector contribute to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, while maintaining economically viable operations? Stora Enso and the Newcastle University (United Kingdom) will tell you how they collaborate to transform a digital modelling tool for forestry management into a tool for proactive biodiversity management.

Description de la séance

A global company with important forest landholdings across seminatural managed boreal forests in the Nordics, Stora Enso has developed a digital twin forest model to manage its forestry activities in Sweden. What if this advanced model could be used not only to ensure economically viable operations but also for adaptive and active biodiversity management?

Since 2024, researchers from Stora Enso and the Newcastle University (UK) have been joining forces to answer this question. In this podcast, Louise Mair from the Newcastle University and Pär Wilhelmsson from Stora Enso will tell you the story of their team collaboration and the various challenges they overcame to combine the Stora Enso’s highly granular forest model with the IUCN’s Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) model.

They will also share the main results of their work and discuss how the resulting model could disrupt the current practices in the forestry industry.
