Engage in an interdisciplinary, hands-on discussion to learn how to apply and calibrate the STAR metric, exploring its opportunities, challenges and limits for stakeholders involved in conservation - governments, Indigenous Peoples, and companies, in order to guide conservation actions and assess progress toward Goal A of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The session will present how very different stakeholders have used the STAR-metric to define their baseline in their area of influence, from estimated to calibrated STAR, and assess the impact of possible conservation actions to reduce species extinction risk. Different case studies will illustrate STAR’s adaptability and implementation challenges and will feed into the interactive session. Case studies will include a collaboration with ORMACC and Indigenous Peoples’ organisations in Mesoamerica, where STAR is applied in Indigenous territories; the experience of private sector; and Costa Rica’s efforts to apply STAR at the landscape level and integrate it into biodiversity strategies, policy frameworks, and decision-making. Through cross-sectoral exchanges, participants will engage in dynamic discussions, exploring lessons learned, challenges and next steps. Designated speakers will summarise key insights, highlighting how to improve the application of STAR and enhance its impact in various contexts.Organised by
