For the first time, IUCN’s Red Lists—of Species, and of Ecosystems—are brought together in a single global initiative on coral reefs. Together, these tools provide the most complete picture yet of biodiversity risk—species, trends, and ecosystems—equipping policymakers, scientists, and practitioners with powerful knowledge to guide urgent conservation action.

With more than 40% of coral species facing extinction, coral reefs are at a tipping point. The first Global Coral Biodiversity Assessment asks the critical question: Are coral reef ecosystems next to collapse? This multi-phase initiative began with a global reassessment of coral species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, followed by calculation of the Red List Index to track extinction risk trends over time. The current phase expands to the ecosystem scale with the first-ever application of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems to coral reefs. This integrated approach recognizes reefs as complex living systems shaped by biological and physical processes, much like forests are more than their trees.
