Peter was elected in 2016 as a member of the Council of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), re-elected to Council in 2021 and appointed as one of four IUCN Vice Presidents. He is a member of the Australian Heritage Council and an Assistant Commissioner with the NSW Natural Resources Commission. Peter chairs the National Benefit Advisory Committee of the Marine National Facility, the boards of the Australian Tropical Herbarium and the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute, and is a director of OceanEarth Foundation. He consults on environment and governance issues. Peter was Director of National Parks and head of Parks Australia from 1999-2013. From 1994-99 he was Deputy Executive Director of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association. He was an adviser on environment and sustainable development to the Australian Minister for Primary Industries and Energy from 1990-94. From 1974-1990 he worked at the Research School of Biological Sciences, ANU supporting a range of research projects on the ecology and eco-physiology of native plant species. He has a BSC and Master of Public Policy from ANU.
