Why attend

In advance of and at the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress, IUCN Members will consider adoption of a Policy on Synthetic Biology in relation to Nature Conservation. This session will share information on the elements of the draft policy, and explore potential uses for the policy once it is adopted.

Session Description

In 2021, IUCN Members adopted IUCN Resolution WCC-2020-Res-123, mandating development of an IUCN Policy on Synthetic Biology in relation to Nature Conservation. The implementation of this Resolution (www.iucn.org/synbio) has included an inclusive and participatory process (including convening the first-ever IUCN Citizens’ Assembly, two-rounds of Union-wide solicitation, and dissemination of a guidance document and a call for information) and appointment by the IUCN President of a formal Policy Development Working Group (which met three times to draft the policy and revise it on the basis of two rounds of Union-wide peer review). An IUCN Council motion including the policy is now being considered for adoption by IUCN Members. This world café session will share information with participants explaining the rationale for the draft policy’s content (especially regarding how middle ground was found between divergent perspectives from IUCN constituents), and seek participant input on its potential use in practice, around the world.
