Why attend

A conservation showcase to display the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge into IUCN Red List assessments, including a case study from the Lake Tanganyika freshwater fishes, and key lessons learnt from this process.

Session Description

This session will briefly discuss the incorporation of traditional knowledge into IUCN Red List assessments and the importance of this step in the assessment process to amplify local and indigenous people’s voices, helping to develop a more holistic understanding of the conservation status of life on Earth. The session will also showcase a real-world example of this process through the upcoming completion of the Lake Tanganyika freshwater fish reassessments, where traditional knowledge will be incorporated from the four riparian countries surrounding the lake (Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi, and The Democratic Republic of Congo). Lastly, the session will provide a summary of the lessons learnt.
