Why attend

Explore and learn from emerging and recent research and initiatives in protected and conserved areas around the world, highlighting the diverse benefits these places provide to society and economies.

Session Description

Protected and conserved areas are vital for conservation of biodiversity and protecting ecological values. Protected and conserved areas also provide a host of social and economic benefits that outweigh the investments made to establish and manage these places, and result in good return on investment. Recognizing and valuing the wide-ranging socioeconomic outcomes (in monetary and non-monetary ways) that protected and conserved areas provide is crucial for ensuring these places are supported politically and financially for the long-term. Several protected area agencies/IUCN members and partners will share their work and provide an overview of the opportunities, priorities, challenges, and successes in this space. Presenters and participants will discuss key issues and questions to advance thinking and work to demonstrate the significant impact protected and conserved areas have on so many aspects of society.
