Por qué asistir

Attend this session to explore how the first global Red List of Ecosystems assessment for coral reefs, together with the Red List of Species and Red List Index indicator, offers an integrated view of reef risk. Learn how these tools inform conservation priorities, policy, and finance for coral reef protection.

Descripción de la sesión

Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse and valuable ecosystems on the planet, yet they are increasingly threatened by climate change, overfishing, and pollution. For the first time, long-term coral reef monitoring data from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network are being applied in a global Red List of Ecosystems assessment for coral reefs. This work complements the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species for reef-building corals and the Red List Index, which tracks extinction risk trends over time. Together, these assessments and indicators provide an integrated picture of coral reef status by linking species, ecosystems, and trends, while offering governments and conservation actors robust indicators for reporting on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The session brings together leading experts, including David Obura Chair, Christi Linardich, John Burt and Ena Suarez, to demonstrate how these assessments are shaping conservation planning, environmental finance, and global action for coral reef survival.
