Many biodiversity hotspots are located in areas that experience conflict, instability or weak governance, making conservation aims more difficult to achieve. This session will share lessons from conservation practitioners on conflict-sensitive conservation and introduce a new online, free Conflict-Sensitive Conservation course, to be hosted by the IUCN Academy.

The session is a collaborative effort between PeaceNexus Foundation, Africa Wildlife Foundation (AWF), Conservation International (CI), Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx) / Environmental Law Institute (ELI), Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN), International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), IUCN (CEESP and Academy) and WWF.It will set the scene on conflict-sensitive conservation before opening the floor for some flash exchanges between session collaborators and participants on specific components of conflict-sensitive conservation practice, including:
- Integrating conflict sensitivity and rights-based approaches
- Ensuring inclusivity and a gender-responsive approach
- Particular challenges and opportunities for young conservation activists
- MEL in conflict-sensitive conservation
Key takeaways and reflections from the group work will be shared. The session will conclude with information about the new online, self-paced Conflict-Sensitive Conservation course, hosted by the IUCN Academy. The course will serve as a tool for ongoing learning and exchange across the sector.
