This podcast discusses implementation of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve guidelines for three Biospheres in Australia, and how incorporating Indigenous knowledge systems can promote sustainability.

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve guidelines offer an approach to conservation that explicitly includes human habitation, and privileges Indigenous knowledge systems. This podcast discusses implementation of these guidelines in three Biospheres in Queensland, Australia. Conservation debates today exist on a spectrum between two poles: the transactional view of ecosystem services, and the isolationist view of fortress conservation. Both of these poles understand humans as separate from nature, in contrast to Indigenous perspectives which understand people as part of nature. This podcast will include discussion of comparative implementation of the Biosphere model across three reserves, including soundscapes created from extensive field recordings in these reserves.Organised by
