Come discuss the role of the judiciary in addressing the three planetary environmental crises with Supreme Court justices and high court judges, with dialogue on how to support judicial capacity-building to effectively adjudicate environmental issues, promote the environmental rule of law, and safeguard environmental rights.

Descripción de la sesión

Judges play a critical role in advancing the environmental rule of law, fulfilling rights, and addressing planetary crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Without strong legal frameworks and robust, independent judiciaries, effective implementation and enforcement of global conservation measures cannot be achieved.
This session will feature Supreme Court justices and high court judges from several countries in dialogue about two key issues: (1) trends in adjudication of environmental and climate litigation; and (2) knowledge-sharing and capacity building regarding good practices for managing and resolving environmental disputes.
The session will be led by members of the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment (GJIE), a worldwide network of judges and courts, in partnership with the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), UNEP, and others. GJIE was established in 2016 with the direct support of WCEL and has been endorsed by IUCN Congress resolutions in 2016 and 2021.
