Participants will hear directly from the Costa Rican government and NGO partners how governments and organizations can work together to advance management of biodiverse areas in the high seas, including the Thermal Dome, through science and political will in preparation for future High Seas Treaty CoPs.

The Thermal Dome is a rich and biodiverse oceanographic feature off the Central American Pacific coast. Its dynamic nature originates from the interaction of swirling wind and oceans currents, which causes the upwelling of cold and nutrient-rich waters from the deep ocean to the surface, creating perfect conditions for plankton to thrive, sustaining a food chain of zooplankton, forage fish and predators like tuna, sharks, dolphins and whales.The Costa Rican government is leading an effort to conserve and sustainably use the Thermal Dome, starting a process to develop an area-based management tool under de BBNJ Agreement. As this Agreement nears the 60 ratifications needed to enter into force, it is important for governments and organizations to prepare dossiers of potential areas for special management in international waters. During this session, participants will learn about the importance of the Dome and current efforts to conserve it.
