Attendees will gain comparative insights on conservation strategies and governance models of effective area-based measures in two of the world’s most vital ecosystems.

This session brings together experts from the Amazon and Congo Basin to discuss the development and implementation of Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) and their complementarity with protected areas. Through short presentations and a panel discussion, participants will explore how ecosystemic and community-centered approaches are being applied in both regions to strengthen biodiversity protection and climate resilience. The event will highlight the importance of South-South dialogue for sharing learnings about inclusive governance models and effective conservation frameworks tailored to diverse socio-environmental realities. This dialogue is particularly relevant for decision-makers, researchers, and practitioners working on the interface of conservation policy, indigenous and local governance, and international biodiversity commitments.
