Por qué asistir

Increasingly we see human-made obstacles preventing natural flow and processes on rivers, especially with raising pressures on freshwater resources in developing countries. In this session we will talk about various efforts in Europe to preserve these high priority dynamic and complex ecosystems.

Descripción de la sesión

European freshwater fish are amongst the most threatened taxonomic groups. According to the 2024 Living Planet Index report, migratory freshwater fish declined by 75% since 1970. We will present the work on the Swimways Programme to identify, conserve, and restore their migration routes. We will also present IUCN Save Our Species Initiative for Sturgeons - which supports three projects in Romania and Georgia for this priority species. Europe's last major free-flowing river system is Vjosa - Aoos and we will hear from the Vjosa Wild River National Park director, and The Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA) about the situation in both Albania and Greece.
