Pourquoi participer

The consumption of commodities and vegetable oils are important for a healthy diet. However, it is necessary to work on sustainable production practices to reduce their impact on biodiversity. Production practices, metrics for biodiversity conservation and certifications for these crops are some of options to be explored at this event.

Description de la séance

The land area for production of vegetable oils and commodities is growing due to their demand and this trend is expected to continue to outpace. If natural ecosystems are replaced by new plantations, this will negatively affect biodiversity. Therefore, practices matter. GEF Food Systems project in Guatemala, and Burkina Faso will show the importance of promoting sustainable practices, forest certifications, zero-deforestation commitments and ensuring local producers join global sustainable production tables, would allow reducing the impact of African Palm Oil and Maize. This integrated approach would ensure sustainable /socially fair production, using science-based metrics that allow for actions that can reduce their impacts on biodiversity, allowing a comprehensive landscape management, food security, sustainable production and biodiversity conservation.
