Baravi THAMAN

Biography

Baravi Thaman is an environmental scientist from Suva, Fiji, with expertise in marine and coastal management, biological conservation, and community-based resource management. He holds a PhD in Marine and Coastal Management from the Universidad de Cádiz, Spain, where his research explored indigenous and local knowledge in managing coastal resources. He also earned a Master’s in Water and Coastal Management from the Universidade do Algarve (Portugal) and the University of Cádiz, focusing on rural community perceptions and conservation.

Baravi’s career spans teaching, research, and consultancy. He has worked as a researcher with the Fundación Universidad Empresa de la provincia de Cádiz. In Fiji, he has served as a tutor and Assistant Lecturer in Geography at the University of the South Pacific and contributed to projects with the National Trust of Fiji, NatureFiji-Mareqeti Viti, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. His consultancy work includes developing management plans for key biodiversity areas, designing training manuals for community-led forest restoration, and conducting protected area assessments.

A dedicated conservationist, Baravi has volunteered in numerous biological surveys and reef monitoring expeditions across Fiji and the Pacific. Fluent in English and Fijian, with working knowledge of Spanish and Tongan, Baravi combines his academic expertise, practical field experience, and multicultural outlook to champion environmental protection and community empowerment.
