Why attend

Outbreaks of coral predators, such as Crown-of-Thorns-starfish, accelerate coral decline under climate-change impacts. Predator management is not just saving coral—it is critical for boosting reef resilience and restoration success. Join experts to discuss lessons from the Great Barrier Reef and explore collaborative approaches to safeguard vital coral ecosystems.

Session Description

Coral predators, including Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTS) and Drupella snails, can cause extensive coral loss, which compounds habitat loss due to escalating climate change impacts. Effective predator management is recognized as a cornerstone of reef resilience and restoration. The session opens with insights from the Great Barrier Reef’s large-scale COTS Control Program, which has pioneered a collaborative, evidence-based approach through crucial partnerships. Building on this, a panel of experts from the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea will explore how these strategies can be adapted and integrated into regional restoration efforts, and discuss logistical challenges, stakeholder engagement, and opportunities for cross-regional collaboration. Join us to engage with practitioners who are advancing comprehensive solutions to strengthen reef conservation in the face of intensifying global stressors.
