Why attend
To learn more about the extensive science behind the Half target, dating back to the early 1970s, and how Indigenous Peoples and local communities can benefit from ambitious spatial targets when rights and justice receives the same prioritization as biodiversity values.
Session Description
Unlike in the climate convention where 1.5 Degrees is universally recognized as the appropriate target (even if 2 Degrees is the politically agreed target), the biological diversity convention has no such clarity. One of the major obstacles to wider support for the Half target is distrust related to conservation’s intermittent record of displacing Indigenous Peoples and local communities through the establishment of protected areas. WILD is proposing the adoption of the Half target with the simultaneous recognition that this target cannot be achieved merely through protected area creation. It requires recognition and restoration of Indigenous Traditional Territories, respect for Indigenous rights and governance systems, and actions to address past dispossession, alongside sustained support for Indigenous stewardship and culturally appropriate practices that uphold cultural and ecological integrity.Organised by
