Why attend

This session will explore how using existing frameworks for migratory bird conservation can help address barriers to implementing One Health approaches for prevention and early detection and action to combat HPAI outbreaks for high priority sites and species along flyways.

Session Description

Enhanced monitoring, early detection and rapid response are critical to minimizing the impacts and spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) among both wild birds and poultry operations, requiring close cooperation, information sharing and timely communication between conservation and veterinary authorities at both site and regional levels. The East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership brings together 40 government and non-government partners and includes a network of over 150 sites of importance for migratory waterbirds across the 22 countries of the flyway, thus providing an existing framework to build capacity for early preparedness and rapid response to HPAI outbreaks at priority sites of high vulnerability and conservation value for migratory bird species, as well as timely communication among flyway countries and partners. A concept proposal has been developed with potential for scaling up to other flyways and networks.
