Why attend

Explore the critical role of mangroves in carbon sequestration, their connection to open-sea ecosystems, and the challenges and solutions for managing these areas across jurisdictions. Learn from experts working on cutting-edge ocean conservation initiatives, including efforts led by the Sorbonne Ocean Institute in Abu Dhabi.

Session Description

In the context of the UN Ocean Decade, this interactive fishbowl session will explore the vital role of nature-based solutions for carbon sequestration, with a focus on mangroves. Mangroves are crucial for capturing and storing significant amounts of CO2 and linking coastal ecosystems to the high seas. The session will cover the science of mangrove conservation and carbon sequestration, governance challenges across jurisdictions, and sustainable co-benefits. Experts will also discuss innovative monitoring technologies advancing conservation efforts, particularly in Abu Dhabi, where the Sorbonne Abu Dhabi Ocean Institute is driving interest in marine and coastal ecosystem protection. This session will bring together legal, policy, scientific, and technological perspectives to explore actionable solutions for integrated ocean governance.
