Why attend

30x30, is an ambitious goal to protect at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas and coastal and marine areas by 2030, as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. However, a common question arises – “what area-based conservation counts towards the target?”

Session Description

Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets necessarily ambitious targets to achieve the inclusion of 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas and coastal and marine areas by 2030 in “…systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, recognizing indigenous and traditional territories where applicable…”. Many nations have well established systems of protected areas but are also looking to expand their portfolio of area-based conservation mechanisms to enable them to meet the target. This diversity of approaches is encouraged. However, there is confusion about as to whether certain mechanisms are protected areas, OECMs, territories and areas conserved by Indigenous peoples and local communities (ICCAs) or better suited to other targets under the GBF (e.g. Target 10 or Target 2). This session seeks to clarify these different approaches, discussing similarities and differences to enable both accurate reporting and the full intent of Target 3 to be realised.
