Why attend

This session will provide unique insights into: A new social-ecological approach reuniting land uses, institutional arrangements and stakeholder interests and values, benefiting both society and nature and helping to achieve key international biodiversity commitments.

Session Description

Biodiversity loss and rapid social, political, economic, and ecological changes require a fresh look at how conservation areas are physically and socially embedded in landscapes. Strong connections can help conservation areas adapt by connecting to and accessing resources beyond their boundaries in response to these disruptions.

This session explores three critical, interrelated aspects where conservation could strengthen connections: ecological shifts in landscape dynamics, societal appreciation and support, and the ability to bridge institutional and administrative divides. By understanding how institutions, ecosystems, and communities interact - and recognizing the diverse ways people value and depend on nature - this approach offers practical solutions for protecting biodiversity, resolving conflicts, and aligning interests.

Participants will be invited to explore these key boundaries in biodiversity conservation and discuss ways to assess and rekindle connections. Join us to rethink conservation through a social-ecological lens and explore innovative strategies for a more connected and resilient future.
