Why attend

Explore four decades of conservation lessons from the yellow-shouldered Amazon. Learn how interventions such as nest protection, predator control, and community engagement have led to population recoveries while tackling persistent poaching and knowledge gaps across the species’ range.

Session Description

This panel reviews more than 40 years of decentralized research and conservation efforts for the yellow-shouldered Amazon (Amazona barbadensis) across the southern Caribbean and mainland Venezuela. The discussion highlights population recoveries on Bonaire and Margarita through targeted interventions—including nest protection, predator control, habitat restoration, health monitoring, and community engagement—while addressing persistent poaching and the uncertain status of populations on the mainland. Panelists will also present a range-wide action plan aimed at restoring functional, viable wild populations throughout the species’ historic range. This case study illustrates how sustained, community-inclusive conservation action can protect species threatened by poaching, habitat loss, and fragmentation.
