Why attend
Join this session to uncover the pressing conservation challenges facing loggerhead turtles in Oman, learn about a community led approach to understand population trends and mitigate threats in collaboration with local and international partners.
Session Description
• Masirah Island is one of the largest nesting rookeries for loggerhead turtles in the world. Research confirms that this population has suffered a 79% decline since the late 1970s and has led to the North-west Indian Ocean loggerhead population to be identified as Critically Endangered under the IUCN Redlist. The major threats that impact both habitat and population numbers are land-use disturbances, such as coastal development, light pollution, and beach driving; and sea-based disturbances such as turtles being unintentionally caught in fishing nets (bycatch). The Environment Society of Oman and The Oman Environment Authority have collaborated with senior international scientists to accelerate knowledge and understanding of species biology, ecology and conservation needs, which has resulted in a conservation program working in partnership with the local community to alleviate threats of lighting pollution and net entanglements and deliver environmental awareness campaigns to inclusive of fishermen, women and children.Organized by
