Phong is an environmental and agricultural professional (D.Sc.) with 15 years of research experience. He earned his PhD from the Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation (INRES) at the University of Bonn. With more than 20 years of work in the Mekong Delta, he has developed extensive expertise in water management, climate change, land subsidence, and their impacts on biodiversity and livelihoods.
Throughout his career, Phong has served as a university lecturer, project manager, technical advisor, trainer, and consultant. He has considerable experience in designing, leading, and implementing projects and fieldwork. Since August 2022, he has been with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), where his work focuses on piloting flood-based agriculture as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) to mitigate the impacts of rice intensification, developing mangrove polyculture systems to strengthen the resilience of coastal mangrove landscapes, and advising on ecosystem-based adaptation. He also serves as the focal point for IUCN’s work in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
