Julie Melbourne holds a Bachelor of Laws and brings more than 30 years’ experience working alongside Indigenous communities in the Kimberley. Her work has spanned native title claims, negotiations and agreement making, as well as corporate governance and community development.
Since 2011, Julie has managed the Nyamba Buru Yawuru Environmental Services Unit (ESU), contributing to the Yawuru vision of Mabu buru (healthy country), Mabu ngarrungunil (strong community) and Mabu liyan (good feelings).
The Yawuru people are the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters in and around Broome, Western Australia. This includes ownership of Gumaranganyjal (Roebuck Plains cattle station), jointly managed Conservation Parks, and an Indigenous Protected Area overlaying both landscapes.
Under Julie’s leadership, the ESU team works in partnership with the Yawuru community to protect these cultural and ecological values. Their focus is on building tools, knowledge systems and skills to support the holistic and sustainable management of Yawuru land and sea country.
