Why attend
Be part of the pre-launch of the WIO LMMA Alliance and the genesis of a Pan-African LMMA Alliance. This session offers a chance to learn from marine CBNRM across Africa, contribute to mapping efforts, and help shape next steps in building a continent-wide movement for community-led marine conservation.
Session Description
Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), a powerful model of community-led conservation in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) are gaining traction in other parts of Africa, though often under different names. The first WIO LMMA Forum, held in Madagascar in 2024 with over 300 participants from nine countries, led to the creation of the WIO LMMA Alliance. This session will serve as the official pre-launch of the Alliance while also exploring pathways toward a Pan-African LMMA Alliance. It will showcase the Alliance as a model for regional collaboration and community leadership, map existing LMMAs and community-based marine initiatives across Africa to inform a continental database, and exchange lessons from both African networks and the Pacific experience. Participants will co-develop a roadmap for continental expansion, identify potential national focal points, and secure commitments from partners. The session will conclude with a collective call to action to establish a Pan-African LMMA Alliance.Organised by
