Why attend

Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities across the Americas are reshaping conservation through inclusive governance and co-management. This session highlights proven strategies for equitable, rights-based, and culturally grounded conservation.

Session Description

Across Latin America and the Caribbean, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are leading innovative governance and co-management approaches that are reshaping conservation practice. This session will highlight ICI-supported initiatives—including those led by Indigenous Fellows and IPLC organizations from Central America, the Amazon, Andes, and Southern Cone—that strengthen territorial governance, recognize traditional knowledge systems, and advance shared stewardship between communities and governments. Panelists will share on-the-ground strategies for inclusive, rights-based conservation rooted in reciprocity and cultural values. As countries accelerate progress toward Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) Target 3, this session will examine how IPLC governance and co-management models are central to delivering equitable, scalable, and effective conservation outcomes in the region.
