Why attend

Dive deep into the scientific foundations of the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric, the groundbreaking tool quantifying global extinction risk reduction. Built on Red List science and developed by 60+ conservation organizations, this session unpacks the methodology transforming how we measure conservation impact across the world.

Session Description

The Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric transforms how we approach conservation by quantifying the reduction in global extinction risk achievable through specific actions in specific places. Built on IUCN Red List data and developed through an IUCN-led collaboration of 60 conservation organizations, STAR provides a powerful tool for measuring and achieving conservation impact. STAR's applications are rapidly expanding across the conservation landscape. From guiding protected area planning to informing sustainable agriculture and business assessments, from Indigenous and Local Community engagement to conservation finance, STAR is fast becoming integral to IUCN's fundamental knowledge products and conservation efforts. It now powers key initiatives like IUCN's Measuring Nature Positive Initiative and the Contributions for Nature Platform. Whether you're new to STAR or already familiar with its applications, this session will bring you up to speed on the science and the applications.
