Dr. Alejandro von Bertrab is head of the Indo-German bilateral project Restore, Conserve and Protect Forest and Tree Cover for NDC Implementation in India (RECAP4NDC) commissioned by the International Climate Initiative (IKI). Throughout his professional career he has specialized in restoration, ecosystem services, community participation in nature conservation, protected area management, climate change and private sector engagement in sustainable development. With over 26 years of experience (18 of which at GIZ), he has held numerous positions in the U.S., Mexico, Germany and India, covering various topics including promoting forest landscape restoration, fostering public private partnerships, incorporating climate change aspects into protected area management, valuation of ecosystem services and integration into development planning, and project design and evaluation. He holds a PhD in environmental sociology with focus on ecological restoration from Mexico’s National Autonomous University, an MPhil in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK and a BS in International Economics from the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, USA.
