Why attend

Attend this session to learn how recognizing Indigenous and Traditional Territories with Free, Prior, and Informed Consent is essential to achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 3 and ensuring just, effective, and rights-based biodiversity conservation.

Session Description

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in its fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) adopted, in a historic commitment, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) recognizes the important roles, rights and contributions of the Indigenous Peoples to the conservation of biodiversity, particularly through Target 3 which mandates that, “by 2030 at least 30 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas, and of marine and coastal areas… are effectively conserved and managed through... protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, recognizing indigenous and traditional territories… recognizing and respecting the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, including over their traditional territories.”

This objective can only be achieved through the recognition of Indigenous and Traditional Territories with the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples.
