Extension of Nomination Deadline for IUCN Council Elections

The IUCN Council has extended the nomination deadline for certain positions in the 2025 elections. On 8 February 2025, upon the recommendation of the Election Officer, the IUCN Council decided to extend the nomination deadline. This extension applies to proposals for the position of Treasurer and additional nominations for Councillors elected from the Regions, but only for statutory regions where fewer complete and validated nominations were received than there are available seats by the initial deadline of 7 February 2025.

Regions with Extended Nomination Deadline
At the close of the initial nomination period, the Election Officer identified the following regions with fewer nominations than available seats:

  • Africa
  • East Europe, North and Central Asia
  • Oceania
  • North America and the Caribbean

Guidance for Nominations
In line with the Council’s guidance (decision B/VII, 18 August 2024), nominations should attract high-calibre candidates and promote balance in Council representation regarding:

  • Governmental and non-governmental representation
  • Developed and developing country representation
  • Gender diversity
  • Youth inclusion
  • Indigenous peoples’ representation

Call for nominations

IUCN Members eligible to vote[1] are invited to submit proposals for persons to be nominated by the IUCN Council for the positions of Treasurer and Councillors elected from the regions (only select regions) to the Election Officer, Mr David Forman at: .

The deadline for receipt of proposals is 21 February 2025 at 13:00 GMT/UTC.

Nominations for Councillors elected from the regions

The process for the nomination of Councillors elected from the regions listed below has been extended to 21 February 2025:

  • Africa
  • East Europe, North and Central Asia
  • Oceania
  • North America and the Caribbean
     

The process is automated and IUCN Members eligible to vote[1] are requested to submit nominations for candidates using the online platform, accessible via the IUCN Congress website, and that has been developed for this purpose. There is a guidance note available to help you through the nominations process.

The deadline for receipt of nominations for these regions is 21 February 2025 at 13:00 GMT/UTC. To facilitate the work of the Election Officer, we kindly ask you to submit your proposals well before the deadline.

The letters explain in detail the nomination process for the positions and include, as attachments, the qualifications required for the position as approved by Council, as well as other reference documentation.

Election Officer and Deputy Election Officer

The Election Officer supervises the elections at the World Congress and the counting of the votes in accordance with Rule 74 of the Rules of Procedure of the World Conservation Congress.

The Deputy Election Officer acts in the place of the Election Officer whenever the latter is unable to act as Election Officer, in case of a conflict of interest, or if the Election Officer has the same nationality as any of the presidential candidates and provides support to the Election officer to ensure the integrity of the elections.

On 16 May 2024, on the recommendation of the Bureau and the candidates proposed by the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, taking into account the Terms of Reference approved by the Bureau of the (Dec B12/4), the IUCN Council appointed Mr David Forman as the IUCN World Conservation Congress Election Officer and Ms Claudia de Windt as the Deputy Election Officer.
